The speculation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction implies that the team might be building a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also notoriously flexible, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can get ready for a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
