The star has donated the complete sum of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the trust for venues, which operates to preserve the United Kingdom's independent music venues.

The star was given the cheque on October 16 as his new release the album was named the best record of the previous year.

He has decided to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role small stages had in his early career.

"I personally wouldn't be doing my current career if it wasn't for all the shows I did around the North East, and beyond, when I was starting out," remarked Sam Fender. "These spaces are iconic, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these venues have shut down – roughly one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, well-known musicians such as Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its attempts to support the industry, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

He also joined in, generating over £100k on his recent tour to support numerous local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

These funds supported venues that were confronting imminent closure due to difficulties stemming from floods, blazes and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Other venues received financial assistance in modernizing infrastructure and technical equipment that positively impacted artists and fans.

"The concept that revenue from shows in major spaces helps the independent spots, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just logical," Fender has commented.

The musician is not the first artist to give his award prize money to good deeds.

When Pulp won the trophy in the mid-90s for their record Different Class, lead singer Cocker declared that the band would give their cash to the organization War Child.

During 2002, musician Ms Dynamite split her prize among a few organizations, such as the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I donated a grand to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was growing up and they needed better apparatus," the artist shared with outlets.

Two years ago, they contributed their funds to the local youth club that supported their band, in addition to other local music groups.

Also 1994 winners they contributed their winnings to a charity for MS after a close contact was identified with the condition.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," stated vocalist Small. "The prize was the bonus but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our winning touched another person's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had rescued a couple of grassroots venues in the South East, by placing them under public stewardship.

One venue in that area and The Croft in Bristol were acquired under the public acquisition program, which is backed by the arts council and supporters who acquire "shares" in the buildings.
