As any prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary game development, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
