The Unseen Psychological Scars Following a Devastating Hurricane: The Legacy of Mental Anguish in Jamaica.

When the powerful Category 5 storm struck Jamaica on the 28th of October with 185-mile-per-hour winds, it left behind a landscape of utter destruction. Residences, hospitals, and key utilities were destroyed, causing 32 deaths and disrupting the lives of an staggering 1.5 million. For therapist Toni-Jan Ifill, it was instantly apparent that the physical wreckage would be shadowed by profound and enduring psychological scars.

“Simple occurrences can provoke them,” Ifill explains. “One woman described a cart we often move through the passageways, whose noise sounded like breaking wood and the howling wind. She no longer wants to hearing that auditory reminder.”

A month and a half after the hurricane, which also affected neighboring Cuba, recollections of the horrific event continue to affect some staff at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston. Even the sound of a downpour can now prompt trauma responses among individuals who endured it.

The Unseen Cost Beyond Billions in Damage

The catastrophic event resulted in a massive recovery package worth up to $6.7 billion over several years and an further payment of millions from a groundbreaking risk financing tool. Yet, experts warn this economic assistance fails to account for the unseen cost: pervasive mental health crises—particularly among those still recovering from a previous disaster in 2024.

While the primary focus is directed toward restoring buildings, studies over the past three years indicate that the likelihood of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) increases significantly after hurricanes and displacement. Experts are now urging the inclusion of psychological care into disaster response plans across Caribbean nations.

Compounded Vulnerabilities: Insecurity and Mental Health

Researchers highlight how prolonged homelessness, loss of livelihoods, and inadequate services amplify emotional distress. A scholarly article identified a heightened danger of severe mental health issues after climate-related events. Further research recorded similar fear, anxiety, and distress among people displaced by tropical cyclones.

Dr. Eamin Heanoy, a expert who has analyzed disaster survivors globally, notes that survivors could face several key psychological hurdles: anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

Dr. Rose-Ann Smith, a scholar in risk reduction, concurs. She observes that while humans are generally resilient, as the climate crisis worsens, mental health is becoming an ever more critical issue—despite the fact that extensive research is still lacking.

Both Smith and Heanoy found that women showed greater psychological suffering than male counterparts. “This suggests women are more susceptible than males when disaster strikes,” Smith explains.

The Difficult Journey to Psychological Repair

Dr. Heanoy notes that while some early progress in well-being is often seen within a year, long-term outcomes are still unclear. The likelihood to which survivors bounce back is largely determined by the nature of the trauma and the care they receive.

The experts note that the loss of homes and possessions can heighten the psychological burden to recover. Smith labels housing loss “a major source of stress,” notably when financial safety nets are absent. “Reconstruction comes with its own emotional tax,” she emphasizes.

Ifill sees the parallel situation among her patients: “Individuals who had mental health conditions before have found it’s much more severe in this time since the storm.”

Apart from the emotional toll, practical problems remain. The hurricane destroyed critical water infrastructure, hampering the full return of clean water. Financial aid, while helpful, do not address all of the chronic vulnerabilities exposed by the storm.

Social Cohesion as a Vital Foundation

Critically is that physical reconstruction by itself fails to mend the deep sorrow caused by permanent disabilities. Research consistently finds that survivors frequently report community support to be more responsive than official aid.

“The government’s role is crucial,” Smith states. “If it fails to materialize, or when it is delayed, local people support one another.”

Ifill also highlights the strength of mutual support in coping with disaster. She notes she was “moved by the sense of humour” among tight-knit groups. “Your house is gone, right? But if a community has a supportive culture, they make jokes about the storm.”

She further commends efforts to support emotional well-being after the disaster but warns about the harms of consuming endless negative news. “I recommended limiting social media, sticking to reliable news, and using messaging apps to connect with family.”

A Growing International Focus

Recently, mental health has become a higher priority from global organizations due to the intensifying climate crisis. The growing regularity of extreme weather has led to the development of guidelines for psychological first aid.

Major health organizations have developed detailed resources to train field workers in delivering emotional aid in the aftermath of catastrophes. These initiatives aim to build psychological fortitude by building capacity, promoting openness, and facilitating the use of mental health services.

Economic resources are also identified as key for safeguarding emotional well-being. A agricultural worker from another Caribbean nation, who lost his livelihood in a similar event, stresses the frustration that arises when expected aid is not delivered. “They came... But even now, we never got any payment,” he states.

A Call for Holistic Healing

Analysts argue that the Caribbean region accounts for a very small fraction of planetary pollution yet endures disastrous climate impacts. A timely and comprehensive reconstruction is deemed vital to mitigate prolonged suffering.
